ISM VASA Provider for VMware is a storage integration service that connects ISM-managed storage systems with VMware vSphere using the vSphere APIs for Storage Awareness (VASA). By registering with vCenter Server, it publishes array capabilities and health information, enabling policy-based provisioning and lifecycle management of datastores and VMware vSphere Virtual Volumes (vVols).

Key capabilities:

  • Exposes storage capabilities (for example, performance tiers, thin/thick provisioning, snapshots, replication, and encryption) to vCenter.
  • Enables VMware vVols for per-VM storage policies, granular snapshots/clones, and streamlined provisioning.
  • Integrates with Storage Policy-Based Management (SPBM) to automate compliance checks and remediation.
  • Surfaces array health, capacity, and alerts directly in vCenter for end-to-end visibility.
  • Simplifies administration by reducing manual LUN masking and VMFS management when using vVols.
  • Supports secure registration and communication with certificate-based trust.

Typical requirements:

  • VMware vCenter Server and ESXi hosts at supported versions.
  • Network connectivity between vCenter and the VASA Provider, and between ESXi hosts and the storage system.
  • Properly configured ISM storage arrays with appropriate credentials and certificates.
  • For vVols, compatible array firmware, protocol endpoints, and defined storage containers.

Use it to adopt vVols on ISM storage, enforce consistent storage policies aligned to SLAs, and gain centralized visibility of storage health and capabilities within vCenter. For exact version compatibility and deployment steps, refer to the product’s installation guide.
